Air quality & dust mitigation initiatives

HPA continues to expand dust mitigation activities following air quality monitoring conducted last year to identify issues. These initiatives include:

  • Doubling sweeping in high-need areas to twice per month and sweeping on a routine basis when receiving fill;
  • Incorporating paving for dust mitigation into new developments, for example, at Pier 10, where significant improvements have been noted;
  • Addressing track-out dust in contractors’ environmental protection plans.

HPA works to proactively manage this issue to benefit operations within the port lands and the surrounding communities. Port tenants are also making major strides in this area, with all of the port’s grain terminal operators, for example, making major investments in new grain handling equipment and infrastructure to mitigate fugitive dust.
