<title>Port Authority volunteers keep student rowers safe on the water</title>
      <link>http://www.hamiltonport.ca/NewsPublications/NewsArchive.aspx?newsID=a7e43b7a-bddc-44ac-b22f-988d53a03f31</link>
<description>May 15, 2013, Hamilton, ON – Hamilton Port Authority strives to enhance safety on the waters of Hamilton Harbour. HPA staff members are volunteering to help rowing teams from area high schools and McMaster University stay safe during their training programs this spring.  HPA has partnered with the Leander Boat Club to provide on-water support during the cold water training period, with volunteers stationed aboard the Port’s new Zodiac Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB).

HPA acquired its new Zodiac RHIB in 2012 as part of its ongoing commitment to a safe and secure port and harbour.

A 2011 incident involving school rowing teams dramatically illustrated how quickly conditions on the harbour can change, creating hazards for boaters of all kinds.

Several HPA staff completed Marine Emergency certification in order to be part of the volunteer safety team, in addition to holding a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.  HPA’s President &amp; CEO Bruce Wood is one of the early-morning volunteers.

“It is wonderful to see these young athletes out here, and we are pleased to help make sure everyone stays safe and has fun on the water.  Safety is paramount in everything we do at the Port, so it seemed like a natural thing for us to offer our resources and expertise to Leander and its rowing crews,” said Wood.

“I am especially proud of my staff, who are down here at dawn to volunteer their time and skills in service to the community.”

Leander Boat Club’s cold water training program runs weekday mornings starting at 5:30 am, from early April to June 1. Rowing crews are on the water in single skulls, doubles, fours and eights, with coach boats along side.

“Leander is committed to maintaining a high priority on safety for all of our rowers and coaches,” said Leander Club Captain Aubrey Oldham.  In addition to our own safety training, equipment, and procedures, we are thrilled to have on-water support from the Port Authority volunteers every morning.”

The Port of Hamilton is the largest Canadian port on the Great Lakes in terms of size and cargo handled. The Hamilton Port Authority’s strategic vision is to be the Great Lakes port of choice.

<title>Donning of the Top Hat marks beginning of 2013 season</title>
      <link>http://www.hamiltonport.ca/NewsPublications/NewsArchive.aspx?newsID=0a8beb2c-ba4d-4dcd-8aba-efcbd9f9b855</link>
<description>The first domestic vessel of 2013 arrived in Hamilton Harbour on March 25, marking the beginning of the 2013 shipping season. The Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) vessel, the CSL Laurentien arrived from Sandusky, Ohio carrying a load of coal destined for US Steel at Pier 16.  The Port of Hamilton welcomes more than 600 vessels each season, which runs from the last week of March through the end of December.

Hamilton Port Authority officials greeted the vessel, presenting Captain John Bentum with the ceremonial Top Hat, as part of an annual Port tradition.

Port officials are optimistic about the 2013 shipping season. “We had a strong year in 2012, and we expect our strategy of cargo diversification to continue to drive tonnage growth this year,” said HPA President &amp; CEO Bruce Wood.  As the season’s inaugural shipment illustrates, steel-related cargo is a critical component of the Port’s total tonnage, representing approximately three-quarters of the total.

Other cargoes continue to increase as a proportion of the total.  For example, agricultural commodities now make up 16 per cent of the Port’s tonnage, up from 10 per cent in 2009. This increase has been the result of substantial investments in terminal capacity. “Together with our tenants, we are investing heavily in terminal facilities to handle a wide range of cargo types,” said Bruce Wood.  Liquid cargo is expected to be another growth area through 2013, driven by recent investments in storage and handling infrastructure, such as a new pipe rack to facilitate the loading and unloading of liquid bulk commodities at Pier 22.

The St. Lawrence Seaway System officially marked the start of the season with the opening of the Welland Canal and Montreal-Lake Ontario section with ceremonies in St. Catharines on March 22.

      <title>Award shines a light on energy-saving retrofit project</title>
      <link>http://www.hamiltonport.ca/NewsPublications/NewsArchive.aspx?newsID=90852802-5927-4fa6-832b-00a7adbe006d</link>
<description>The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) is a proud recipient of a Horizon Utilities Energy Excellence Award, announced at a special event on March 22.

The award recognizes HPA for undertaking a lighting retrofit at 450 Sherman Ave., a multi-tenanted warehouse with more than 325,000 square feet of storage and office space.

“The project has delivered great results for us and for our tenants,” said HPA President and CEO Bruce Wood. “Environmental responsibility is one of our primary guiding principles, and we are very pleased when we can save energy, save money, and make our tenants happy – all at the same time.”

Funding for the retrofit came from HPA’s ongoing Green Initiatives program which sets aside funding for projects that reduce energy consumption, and from the Ontario Power Authority’s saveONenergy incentive program. Horizon Utilities assisted HPA throughout the process, providing technical advice and program information. The retrofit involves the ongoing replacement of 1,200 400-watt sodium-vapor light fixtures in favour of high-efficiency light fixtures and motion sensors. When fully complete, the retrofit is expected to result in annual savings of approximately 940,000 kWh, and the project is expected to pay for itself within a year.

The initiative has resulted in a more energy efficient warehouse, with better light coverage and colour rendering.

<title>Agricultural, project cargo the stars of 2012</title>
      <link>http://www.hamiltonport.ca/NewsPublications/NewsArchive.aspx?newsID=bc9165f6-b0d6-4534-a079-a695b8f7b49c</link>
<description>Cargo tonnages through the Port of Hamilton grew in 2012, while the types of cargo handled continued to diversify, year-end results show.

Hamilton’s expanding capacity in the agricultural sector is driving tonnage growth in fertilizer (up 27% over 2011), and grain (up 6%).  While corn and wheat were affected by the uneven weather last summer, it was a great year for Ontario soybeans, with almost a million tonnes being shipped out, most of it to overseas export markets. Agricultural tonnage as a proportion of the port’s total has doubled in the last five years, from 8% in 2008 to 16% in 2012. According to Hamilton’s Economic Development office, the agri-food sector is now a $1.3 billion per-year industry in Hamilton as a whole.  The port and its partners are major drivers of this activity.

The port also handled a variety of interesting project cargo in 2012, with volumes increasing three-fold over 2011. Major shipments included windmill components, power plant process towers, rail cars and nuclear plant rotors. “The Port of Hamilton is well-positioned to move heavy cargo due to its strategic location on the Great Lakes, in close proximity to manufacturing and population centres in Canada and the US, and access to global destinations,” said Bruce Wood, Hamilton Port Authority President &amp; CEO. Hamilton also has the most available staging space for heavy cargo of any Canadian port on the Great Lakes.

Finished steel and iron ore were areas of strength as well, posting significant gains over 2011. Total cargo handled through the port was 10.3 million MT in 2012, an increase of 3% over 2011.
