July 21, 2010: Goods movement leader returns capacity to Hamilton
Logistics capacity in Hamilton has been bolstered with the return of operations at a strategic facility in the Eastport lands. The Hamilton Port Authority Pier 25 location is under lease to CareGo Innovative Solutions Inc. and will undergo significant investment to upgrade its capabilities. The facility, known as Plant 19 and operated by the company's Steelcare division, is a distribution centre originally designed for automated steel coil transfers.
Originally developed as a single purpose fully automated steel coil handling facility, CareGo has invested an additional $200,000 in hardware upgrades to the building in order to accommodate its Careport division's popular and rapidly growing container program. Both divisions will have operations in the Eastport Drive location.
"To see Steelcare remodel its operations at Plant 19 is a very positive sign of economic growth and strengthens the strategic relationship with one of our valued partners," said HPA President and CEO Bruce Wood. Offering easy access to rail, water, and road, Steelcare's full-service logistics capabilities include North America's only fully-automated, two-high coil, storage facility that boasts 80,000 sq. ft. and 4.3 million tons per year throughput capacity utilizing only one operator. "We look forward to reopening the facility and flowing products through the Port and helping to grow with the City of Hamilton" said CareGo President Demetrius Tsafaridis, parent company of Steelcare.
The Port of Hamilton is the leading Canadian Port on the Great Lakes for maritime trade handling an average of 12 million tonnes of cargo and 700 vessel calls per year. The Hamilton Port Authority's strategic vision is to be the Great Lakes port of choice.
