EnvironmentHPA takes its role as a responsible steward of the environment very seriously. We strive to be an active partner in the protection of Hamilton Harbour, and we view all of our activities through a ‘green’ lens, including greenhouse gas reduction, energy savings, pollution prevention and positive stewardship of the land and water.
Hamilton Harbour RAP
HPA is an active participant in the Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan (RAP), which champions tangible efforts to improve the natural environment, and embraces the multi-use nature of Hamilton Harbour: recreation, residential, industry and nature. www.hamiltonharbour.ca/rap
HPA is contributing $14 million to the Randle Reef Remediation Project, which is now underway. HP is also contributing engineering and contract management services for specific aspects of the project.
HPA has been a member of Green Marine sine 2008. Green Marine is the North American standard for environmental performance in the marine industry, and sets standards for greenhouse gases, spill prevention, community involvement and environmental leadership. Harbour West Marina (operated by HPA) holds a 5-anchor rating for environmental excellence through the Clean Marine program. This program is a comprehensive audit system covering more than 200 environmental practices on all aspects of marine operations, from fueling, to waste oil management, to recycling.
Team Up to Clean Up
HPA and its tenants participate in an annual litter clean-up all around port property, from the West Harbour to Eastport Drive. In 2015, teams collected 149 bags of garbage and 49 bags of recycling.
In 2010, 12 silk lilac trees were planted along Catherine St. N.
In 2010, HPA led a project to create new fish shoals at the former Farr Island. This project improved marine habitat while eliminating a source of odour from cormorants. HPA partnered with Sustain Our Great lakes (members: Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario Ministry of Environment, Departnent of Fisheries & Oceans, Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan, Arcelor Mittal Dofasco) on this project.
HPA works closely with Horizon Utilities to find innovative ways of reducing its energy use. HPA has installed high efficiency lighting at three office buildings, and upgraded warehouse lighting. HPA’s vehicle fleet includes hybrid vehicles.
HPA employs a full-time Environmental Manager, and undertakes inspections of port properties on a monthly basis to identify any potential issues and ensure corrective action.
