Yingkou-Hamilton Sister Port Agreement


Introduction to the agreement

In November of 2005, Hamilton Port Authority signed a Sister Port agreement with Yingkou Port of Liaoning in the Peoples Republic of China. The intention of the agreement is to promote goodwill, trade and maritime business between the two parties. The agreement specifically calls for the exchange of information, ideas and technology in order to improve their respective port operations.


Introduction to Yingkou Port

Group photo of Chinese delegation Yingkou is located in the province of Liaoning in the Peoples Republic of China. It was the first trading port in northeast China and one of the five earliest trading ports in all of China. It has been trading with foreign countries since 1864. Yingkou is the second largest port city in the region with a population of 2.22 million. Its main cargo types include mineral, steel products, grain, aluminium, various bulk liquid and containers.

The annual handling capacity of Yingkou Port is currently 75 million metric tonnes (2005), it is expected to reach 90 million tonnes in 2006, and 100 million tonnes in 2007. Yingkou Port is striving to become on of the top ten largest ports in the Peoples Republic of China. To make this a reality they are currently undergoing extensive construction on piers and channels. After completion of the projects, the handling capacity of Yingkou Port will be over 100 million tonnes.
